Santiponce
Santiponce was founded on the banks of the Guadalquivir river, in what today is known as the island of La Cartuja in Seville.
However, its proximity to the river caused frequent floods and the one in 1603, engulfed the city forever. The survivors sought shelter in a nearby monastery whose monks had given way to higher ground.
The new Santiponce was built on this land, almost entirely on the ruins of the Roman city of Italica.
Today the Archaeological Ensemble of Italica is the biggest attraction of Santiponce.
