Italica was the first Roman city founded in Hispania, and the first city established outside Italy. It was also the birthplace of the Roman emperors Trajan and Hadrian.
Italica is believed that it was a camp city until Julius Caesar in 45 BC gave it legal status as a reward for the support of Italica in its war against Pompey.
Italica reached its period of greatest prominence in the second century during the reigns of Trajan and Hadrian, contributing significantly to the expansion of the town and the revitalization of its economy.
This urban expansion northward is known today as the Archaeological Ensemle of Italica, which consists of the amphitheater, the Roman Theater, the Temple of Trajan and various other monuments.
