“Let us build a church so grand that everyone will believe us to be crazy”, the leaders said in Seville in 1401, before starting the cathedrals’ construction. Indeed, the Cathedral of Seville is the largest gothic cathedral in the world, and the third temple in size after St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, and St. Paul in London. In 1987 it was declared by UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Its construction began in 1401, which was on the site after the demolition of the ancient mosque Aljama Seville. The construction was done over several centuries and therefore presents various types of architecture: Gotham (1433-1528), Renaissance (1528-1593), Baroque (1618-1758), Academic (1758-1823), neo-gothic ( 1825-1928).
The monumental Cathedral of Seville is complemented especially by the Giralda, the bell tower with a statue on its peak.
The treasures of the temple and a large number of paintings by Murillo, as the portraits of San Isidoro and San Leandro; tables as Santa Teresa, of Zurbaran, and the sculpted head of John the Baptist are all worthy of attention.
