District of La Macarena in Seville
Calle Bécquer 5, Sevilla
How to get there

The District of La Macarena is one of the oldest and most popular in Seville

The Brotherhood of the Macarena was founded in 1595 as a congregation of the Sevillian hospital in the convent of San Basilio, to attend to the sick and practice charity and penance.

The church of San Gil, which was moved to the brotherhood in the seventeenth century, was burned in 1936 and it was decided that a new temple would be built.

Virgen de la Macarena is located in the altarpiece, conducted between the XVII and XVIII centuries.  This Madonna is famous for the beautiful expression on her face, between smiling and crying.

In 1966 the temple of the Macarena was granted the privilege of being declared a basilica. You can also visit the museum containing the accessories, mantles, tunics and other pieces of the Brotherhood, one of the richest in Seville.
